Kendal Museum Explores its Wildlife
Dean Gibson school and Kendal Museum combined the scientific study of habitats with the creative experience of art with wildlife artist Marianne Birkby. The children spent the morning investigating the morphology of animals of the Lake District and trying to find the camouflaged animals in the museum's World Wildlife Gallery, coming face to face with a Golden Eagle and discovering the many ingenious ways butterfiles from the tropics can disguise themselves so as to escape the sharp eyes of predators. Fortified by their packed lunches, eaten in the museum lodge, the children had an enjoyable afternoon working with the professional wildlife artist creating a frieze to take back to school of a Lake District hedgerow and populating it with their artwork inspired by the museums' displays of local natural history. Class teacher Jane Jones said 'All the children really enjoyed it and our habitat display looks fantastic!'
